The State of Kansas is divided into 105 counties. Natural wonders throughout the state, such as lakes, streams, hills, and more, serve as popular tourist attractions. The high plains of western Kansas rise toward the Colorado border, where Mt Sunflower stands as the highest point at 4,039 feet above sea level. The Great Plains slope east from the Rocky Mountains through Kansas into Texas, while Central and Eastern areas are hilly in many places, with fertile shortgrass prairies and rolling plains. Kansas has several major rivers, including the Missouri River along its northeastern border with Missouri, and two major tributaries of the Arkansas River-the Arkansas River in southwestern and south-central parts of Kansas and the Kansas River in northern Kansas. Kansas is rectangular in appearance, with an area of 82,278 square miles. In addition to its geographical location, Kansas is known for its diverse landscape and rivers. Nebraska borders it to the north, Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south, and Colorado to the west. It is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States.
